Given the nature of underground tunnelling, TBMs operate slowly and with limited degrees of freedom, making them well-suited for automation and easier to achieve higher levels of autonomy.
Here’s what you need to know to see if using the A-TBM is right for your TBMs.
Can the A-TBM be integrated with any type of TBM ?
Yes. The A-TBM is designed as a “one system, many TBMs” solution, compatible with EPB, Slurry, Variable Density, Double Shield, Crossover, and Gripper machines. Integration scope varies by machine type and requires OPC UA-compatible PLC
Does the A-TBM fully replace human operators?
No. The operator remains in full control at all times. The A-TBM acts like a car’s cruise control — it assists and optimises, but the operator can override or disengage instantly. It cannot start or stop the machine on its own
How does the A-TBM help reduce risks in complex tunnelling projects?
By eliminating human fatigue and slow reaction times. The A-TBM monitors hundreds of parameters simultaneously and corrects every 3 seconds — reducing steering errors, tool overloading, and ground settlement incidents
Can the A-TBM handle different geological profiles?
Yes. It automatically switches control strategies in real time as ground conditions change — from soft alluvium to hard granite — without operator input. Proven across some of the world’s most challenging geology
Where has the A-TBM been successfully deployed?
On three major projects: Klang Valley MRT Line 2 (Malaysia), Western Tunnel Package (Sydney), and Cross Island Line (Singapore) — completing over 23 km of autonomous tunnelling with no incidents
Do operators need training to use the A-TBM?
Minimal training is required. Operators learn to input excavation limits, activate autonomous mode, and respond to alerts. Training is provided by Gamuda Technologies as part of commissioning.
Can the A-TBM automatically erect tunnel rings?
No. Ring building remains a manual operation. The A-TBM manages the excavation stroke only — steering, advance, face pressure, and slurry — and pauses during the ring build phase.
